Biography
In the early ‘70s Lorenzo Carmellini, interior designer and Rocco Magnoli, architect, began their career working with the Team of Urban Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan, in collaboration with their professors of architecture Ferruccio Rezzonico and Vittorio Garatti. It is in that stage that their activity approaches the luxury and custom-made design where the extreme care for detail and the research of excellence in the materials and finishes will become the key-elements of their projects. This inter-disciplinary experience led them to found their own Milan-based studio LABORATORIO ASSOCIATI in 1978, called SPATIUM since 2001.
In 1979 Gianni Versace, at that time one of Italy’s most exciting new names in the fashion world, invited Carmellini and Magnoli to create the image for the Versace boutiques around the world. This mandate presented an enormous challenge, not only because of the prestige and magnitude of the project, but also because many of those boutiques were housed in historical buildings, where they had to deal with the delicate balance between the old and the new.
Further to the experience gained in the fashion industry, the subsequent step for them was to get involved in the tourist-hotel industry: starting from 1987 the first boutique-hotel The Halkin in Belgravia Square, London; from 1994 the renovation of the Hotel du Lac et du Parc in Riva del Garda with its following extensions; from 2001 the refurbishment of the Londra Palace Hotel in Venice and the restoration of the historic Grand-Hotel Cristallo in Cortina d’Ampezzo; from 2004 the Aria Hotel in Prague.
In 1998 Carmellini and Magnoli were commissioned to design the overall image of the first Hotel of Versace griffe: Palazzo Versace in Gold Coast, Australia, opened in 2001.
Spatium is currently involved with the construction of the second Palazzo Versace in Dubai (U.A.E.), of the second Aria Hotel in Budapest and of the extension of the Cristallo Palace Hotel & SPA in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Spatium is also involved in sacred architecture: in 2007 they renovate the Monastero delle Romite Ambrosiane in Santa Maria del Monte sopra Varese, and they design the interiors of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan mosque in Abu Dhabi (U.A.E.), an impressive building for its uncommon size and beauty.
They also sign the project for the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Doha, the first Catholic Church to be built in Qatar (after a break of 1.400 years in this area), opened in April 2008.
In the residential field Spatium designed the interiors as well as the architecture of prestigious homes in Italy and abroad.
Such a wide-ranging professional background has influenced their architectural and esthetic choices in each of their projects; the extreme flexibility of their architectural language, the wide range of materials employed, the collaboration with the most skilled craftsmen in Italy, all this constitute the guiding thread of all Spatium projects.
Rocco Magnoli passed away prematurely on 20 April 2007, leaving to Lorenzo Carmellini and his Team the objective to achieve the top quality in the design and execution of every single detail, thus maintaining vital their approach to every single Project.
